Wolfsonian .Outside museum visit.

Image
The Wolfsonian is one of my favorite museums here in Miami. I was lucky enough to meet Micky Wolfson, and to work and study part of his collection in person. His passion for collecting art that tells a story is inspiring. The goal of the museum is to reveal how people living between 1850-1950  viewed the world and experienced life, through the persuasive power of art and design. Telling how the social, political and technological changes affected their lives. The Wolfsonian has a lot of  propaganda posters and many things related to WWI and WWII. But also a collection tons of other works and materials that are also very interesting to study and look at, many things that you wouldn't necessarily see in other museums. The collections not just take you on a trip down memory lane but opens your eyes to see historical, social and technological changes in a new light and how it affected and impacted who we are and where we are today.

Ornament and the Sources of Design in the Decorative Arts

Museums have been collecting printed and drawn ornaments of all times and periods. Because they understand that art, and the study of art isn't just sculpture and painting, but also found in furniture, woodwork, pottery, textiles and others. However this efforts seem good from the point of view of the craftsmanship, but have a tendency to fail in design, collections still need to incorporate drawings, prints and book decorations. The juxtaposition between drawings, designs and the object gives insight as to how craftsmen used to work, how they compiled their work, and how they executed such. This opportunity of study, offered at museums serves as inspiration for the new craftsman and observers to learn and do the same or create from there. That’s why it is important to collect and study drawings, prints and books for the proper understanding of the functional growth and development of works. Which is why Ivins calls out museums, and the fact that they need to incorporate to thei...

The Outsider Art Fair

The Outsider Art Fair By Jerry Saltz Outsider, Self taught and Visionary are labels still used today to separate artists, and “real artists”  and determine whose work gets chosen to be part of the institutions. Jerry Saltz, criticizes this issue without holding back. He makes valid points which show how ridiculous and outdated this idea is, and how it is time for institutions and everyone to open their eyes and embrace the change. This practice profiles, and discriminates artist. It creates a line where there should be none, and prevents all this talented and creative individuals to gain recognition and claim their spot in the light. Saltz, raises an important point when he talks about how the story of art is being misrepresented, due to opportunities not being given equally, which at the end it affects art itself because there is no such a thing as outsider art. Art, and the art world should be inclusive without excuses. As an artist isn't an artist because they went to ...

White Bird

The White Bird By John Berger John Berger starts the article by mentioning aesthetics, and through the paragraph he explains how  aesthetics have been just reduced to art, but how it is never mentioned the relationship between art and the world, specially nature. How the beauty found in nature will inspire emotions, and how art then serves as a medium in which we try to capture such emotions and make them permanent. He then moves on to talk about craftsmanship, process and construction. Talk about how the subject, the symbolism and placement have a cultural impact. How important it is to choose  materials, because materials help carry the meaning of the work. Because they help translate a message, and elicit feelings. Furthermore he questions functionality, do things need to have a purpose or not?. And they don't always need to have a purpose, sometimes we attach meaning to things without a purpose that help us get through time or life. Because even though they don't ...

*Will add better photos just wanted to make a post* 3 Small Works influenced by one or more household items. My first three pieces were inspired by a painting and a sculpture. 2 Works further exploring the previous items or new ones, using three materials picked in class. The inspiration for the wooden blocks remained the same painting, but the copper sculpture was form a different painting, funny enough since the way it looks could actually be tied to one of my first works.  Final piece, was a more ambitious project. I was inspired still by the same painting I keep on referencing in the rest of my work. This was mainly challenging since I didn't have power because of the hurricane and had to cut everything with a handsaw (as shown in one of the process images). But the biggest challenge was the fact that I am not used to working with wood or making sculptures, but I wanted to step out of my comfort zone aka the computer and make some 3D w...

PAMM- Spots, Dots, Pips, Tile.

Image
When I hear the word Domino, as cuban the first thing that comes to mind is people gathered around the table, screaming, having fun, really just a good time. The exhibition at PAMM is that and much more. This exhibition is about people coming together, connecting, making memories but also about deeper and more important matters. The work presented wants to bring awareness to social issues, race, discrimination, profiling, government and politics, to social classes, religion, identity and much more, through the game of dominoes. This works want to make a connection with the viewer, that leaves a lasting impression. In the sense that when the audience leaves the exhibit they are still asking questions to themselves, and about their surroundings and how dominoes play a part of their lives. Here in South Florida would be safe to asume everyone is familiar with the game and has played at least once in their live. So along side all the deep meanings behind all the works in the exhibi...
