Topic 3: Illustration, Propaganda and Interpretation. In depth.
For this project we were asked to present a portrait and a propaganda piece of the same person. My subject was Kim Kardashian, I decided for the portrait to depict her covered up, put together, more serious and just differently that what we are using to seeing her which is dressed very provocative. Because no one hardly sees her that way, and then for my propaganda piece I chose an image out of a photoshoot she did with GQ, the image is not like a famous nude of her or anything as far as I know. But i just chose that one because it showed her full body, and it was obviously very contrasting with the first image. With the tag saying To die for, which is an expression in a positive way, I wanted to make people think about beauty, and if its something worth dying for. I wanted to show by picking a celebrity something we are all aware of which is how much pressure everyone feels trying to achieve the impossible beauty standard portrayed by celebrities or sometimes people on social medial. Also bring up body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) which is happening a lot now days, heavily influenced by the unachievable beauty standards. Also I wanted to pick Kim Kardashian as the subject of my work, because she is suffering from this same disorder, she is the victim of this now and she is also the cause for many girls.
In class I had a couple of students asked me which one was my work, and without a doubt every girl brought up beauty standards, body issues, image and all of that within seconds while the guys had a little bit more trouble with it. I think this subject, even though we think its very much in our faces now with everyone trying to be body possible, its still not enough and more people need to be aware of it.
After critique I had a minute to talk to Don, and he did bring up a good point which was to have shown her maybe how she looks in a magazine where they show her flaws compared to the propaganda piece where she looks very sexy and flawless. I do think that this would have been a better approach to this subject, but i don't know why when I read portrait I got stuck with an image in my head of just a bust and someone looking at the viewer that I didn't considered that as an option. Also I then started doing research about body dystrophia and other issues, that I focused more on that than the picture. Also I wanna mentioned that this was my very first portrait, and it took me ages and it was so hard, I just wanted to do something out of my comfort zone and not in the computer to just keep pushing myself.
Sorry for the long rant, below I have attached the pics of my work and little snippets of the Kim Kardashian articles.
