Topic 5: Narrative- Packaged Narrative Due Dates
This topic was the hardest in my opinion, but the one I had the most "fun" doing. Fun obviously in " because it was sooooo stressful. My idea for this topic started as mind games, I wanted to create items that would compliment the idea, such as a a board game, or a rubix cube that didnt work and so on. But because of how little time I had, I shifted the narrative to a sense of being trapped, confused, lost, overwhelmend, etc. And still tried to keep somehting from my first idea. My zine, is a map that when opened displays a maze with no exit and the hands of a person that is trapped inside. I decided to build two boxes instead of one, because I felt my narartive wouldnt be the same with just one box. I wanted to make everything more complicated and disturbing for the viewer or person interacting with it. That is why I decided to cover my boxes with mirror, which reflects the environment around it and also changes it wirh everything being reflected off of it. Covering the inside of the boxes with patternst that had optical illusions was part of that and also would be reflected on the second box.
My three objects were a puzzle/ riddle, a nonworking compass and a bell inside a glass box.
The nonworking compass with the map dont show you that you are trapped and that there is no way out. I chose one of those bells that you see at front desks and such, because it is not conected anywhere and its also not that loud, and if used as a medium to communicate chances are no one would hear it either way. The puzzle was another way of the viewer to interact with the piece, when out together completes a riddle that could be use a clue but then again says nothing else other that you are trapped and therees no way out.
The fact that I had to make everything by hand, and in such little time really helped me now to build faster and better boxxes and just things in general. The main box I wanted to aslo add a mirror on top (0n the lid) but after breaking three I just couldnt get it done. Belowe I have attached lots of pictures of the work, and also the progress.
